Commentary: Typical of Thomas Moran's late paintings, "View of Venice" focuses on the well-known Doge's Palace and Bridge of Sighs. Moran visited the city twice, in 1886 and 1890. He first exhibited his Venetian paintings in 1886. Though he had made his reputation as a painter of dramatic Western vistas, these Venetian views proved to be Moran's most popular paintings. Scholars speculate that the Venetian paintings appealed to Americans' appetite for dreamy nostalgia as the country itself struggled with rapid industrialization. The translucent veils of color and glowing atmosphere of "View of Venice" reveal Moran's well-known admiration for British painter Joseph M. W. Turner.
