Commentary: The subject was the first president of Randolph-Macon Woman's College and the portrait was commissioned by the Class of 1907. It was the first painting acquired by the College. Though students raised only enough money to pay for a bust-length portrait, it is said that Chase felt so strongly about the need to include his sitter's hands that he created a three-quarter length portrait at no extra charge. Interestingly, earlier the same year Chase had painted a portrait of James Monroe Taylor, president of Vassar College, which was also a distinguished all-women's school.

Exhibition: Jamestown Exhibition, as part of display of Randolph-Macon educational institutions, 1907.
