Born in Nyack, New York, and educated at Phillips Academy, Cornell spent most of his life in his family home in Flushing, New York.
In the early 1930s Cornell became aware of European Surrealist art, and, inspired by Max Ernst's engravings, began creating his own unique collages. Working in virtual isolation and utilizing objects from his collection of what he termed "ephemera," Cornell created elaborate, idiosyncratic, and mysterious compositions in shadow boxes.
