Trained at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Art Students League in New York, Frieseke moved to France in 1898. A second-generation Impressionist, he moved to Giverny in 1906. Frieseke would live there until the 1930s, when he returned to the United States.

Influenced throughout his career by Art Nouveau design as well as by the tone-on-tone innovations of James McNeill Whistler, Frieseke's typical all-over patterning also suggests some similarity to the Post Impressionists. He remains best known for his decorative compositions, airy color schemes, and single-minded interest in depicting women.
