Born 1887 in Kiev, Archipenko's artistic upbringing far differed from the traditional education typical to academically trained artists. After the young Archipenko's removal from the University of Kiev for overly progressive ideas and his subsequent withdrawal from the Parisian L'Ecole des Beaux Arts, the artist opted to study independently for 12 years in France until he founded an art school in Berlin. At this time, Archipenko experimented with Cubist-based sculpture to construct pure, abstract forms with symbolic identities. After moving to America the artist opened yet another school, L'Ecole d' Art in New York. Until his death in 1964, he wrote, taught and continued to produce art in sculpture, painting, drawing and print.
