A Native American artist, Bales is best known for pieces inspired by her native heritage. Although she never lived on a reservation, Bales is the official historian of her Iowa tribe, and her mother is one of only 24 full-blooded remaining Iowa. Despite a very typical American childhood, Bales has remained inspired by her ancestral heritage and has consequently received much attention in the Indian art world, even receiving the Oklahoma Indian Artist of the Year award at the age of 27. Despite working in a style which is often directly linked to spirituality, Bales asserts that her work does not focus on spiritual content, but rather prefers that observers take her works as visual expressions, like any other piece of art, and interpret for themselves the significance of each piece.
