Bishop was born in Cincinnati and raised in Detroit but spent her adult life in New York. There, she immersed herself in the energy and human drama of the urban scene. After early training in illustration, she studied at the Art Students League in New York and it was there that she became interested in depicting the lives of ordinary working people.
Influenced by her League teachers Kenneth Hayes Miller and Guy Pene du Bois, Bishop soon became a central member of the so-called 14th Street School, a group of artists working around Union Square and interested in everyday city life. Bishop would become especially well known for her robust, affectionate portrayals of working women.
